Do you know a student looking for something fun to do after school? A place they can go to make new friends and learn new skills? How about an opportunity for them to earn money on the sale of their handmade items at the same time?
In our core Teen After School Program, students learn vocational, entrepreneurial and life skills by working with our shop instructors and volunteers. Kids Making It offers strong, adult role models and mentoring relationships (3:1 youth/mentor ratio) that bolster our teens’ self-confidence, social skills and interest in academic achievement. For the fourth year in a row, 100% of KMI’s students have succeeded academically and graduated from high school!
KMI teaches real world entrepreneurial skills and introduces teens to the free market system. Students have the ability to complete a variety of projects and the option to sell their creations in our retail shop located in downtown Wilmington. They also get to keep 100% of the profit on their sales! This micro-enterprise offers at-risk teens vocational instruction, income and their own “small business” experience.
Our program is for students 13-18 years old and runs year-round (4:00pm – 6:00pm during the school year and 3:00pm – 5:00pm in the summer). Students that qualify for the public schools’ free or reduced lunch program or who are at risk of juvenile delinquency are eligible to apply for our free program. Other risk factors are taken into consideration. Please call to see if your student qualifies. Applications are accepted year-round!
